THE UNIVERSE: A BRIEF GUIDE

The name Rusper dates back to c.1200, when the settlement first grew up around a Benedictine Priory which was disbanded in 1537 leaving the parish church as a reminder. The tower is the only remaining part from medieval times. In 1840, the graves of a medieval prioress and four nuns, were unearthed at The Plough, one of the surviving buildings from the 16th century. By 1892, The Plough was a functioning inn. In 2007, after a conscientious and attentive restoration, The Attic Rooms were unveiled, comprising three rooms, aptly named The Priory, The Nunnery and The Attic Room.

This event, organised by the East Sussex Astronomical Society, was in aid of Brighton Housing Trust. Along with William Joyce and Melanie Davies, I gave my 'Brief Guide to the Universe' within the packed, cosy and beautiful attic rooms of this historical pub.

A fun evening was had by all, with the bonus of clear skies enabling visitors, both with the naked eye and through telescopes to enjoy the Moon, constellations, Iridium flares and a passing of the International Space Station.
